We’re back with Episode 2 of The Reqs - our microfiction series about hiring and interviewing that shows why your org needs The Interview Arc - a program that trains your interview panels while your recruiters focus on recruiting.
Episode 2: "Did they even see my resume?"
Hey so how did your conversation with Sam go? Their department works super close with this role so I hope it was insightful.
Sidra already knew this interview went well. The candidate was great and Sam's team always seemed to have good convos with candidates even though Sam was fairly new. But she didn't worry - they had a whole intake conversation and she sent tons of info on the candidates in addition to making sure their details in the ATS reflected all the positive conversations and insights so far. So she shot this text off quickly before her next intake meeting and set a reminder to circle back in 30 minutes when she was done.
The response made her stomach drop.
Sidra, thanks for checking in. I was gonna email you. Sam was…interesting. Not sure it went well. Kinda felt like they didn't know much about why I was meeting them. Also, did they even see my resume? I didn't get any questions on my experience - mostly just asked why I wanted to work there and asked a lot about my last company. Might be an off day? Also, I asked how this role worked with their team and Sam didn't have any specifics.
Sidra let out curse words. Sam had been through their training deck and was set for their next training session next year. She had told Una that waiting until next year was too far out for training.
She went to her messaging.
Sam, how did the interview go?
Four hours later, she got a response.
Oh hey. I think it was good. Solid candidate. Are there more for me to talk to?
Did you fill out the scorecard?
Not yet. Back to back meetings. But I'm usually good at remembering details.
Got it. Did you ask the questions from the interview kit? I am interested specifically in the collaboration one and the one about that system your team uses that they know.
Oh um..I forgot those. Wait. Where are they? Oh nvm. I see them. I didn't ask those. I asked the ones my last company used. They seemed solid and got good feedback tho. Do we have to use those ones?
As I said in your onboarding, we def want you to.
Oh. Got it. Ok. Man, there are a lot of them here.
What stuck out for you most? About to debrief the hiring manager.
Silence.
Sidra put her head down on her desk. She screenshotted the conversation and sent it to her boss, Una. With the word "dying" next to it.
Sh*t. How many more reqs does that team have this year again?
12 more for the next 4 months.
That's a lot of reqs.
A lot of reqs.
If this hits too close to home, you're not alone.
